Ghosts of Yesteryear’s State Capital

❧ ✦ ❧

Annapolis, Maryland, is a picturesque waterfront city on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay, about 30 miles east of Washington, D.C., and 25 miles south of Baltimore. Settled in the 17th century and named Maryland’s capital in 1695, Annapolis played an important role in the American Revolution and briefly served as the nation’s capital from 1783 to 1784. Today, its historic district is celebrated for its beautifully preserved 18th-century architecture, brick sidewalks, narrow streets, and landmarks such as the Maryland State House, U.S. Naval Academy, and William Paca House. The city’s waterfront adds another dimension, with sailing vessels, working docks, restaurants, and scenic views across the Chesapeake. Visitors are attracted by Annapolis’s unusual combination of American history, maritime traditions, charming architecture, and lively waterfront atmosphere. Walking its historic streets offers a memorable glimpse into Maryland’s colonial and early-American past.
