Stephen B. "Steve" Hales — Preservation Artist

Steve's mother once told him, “Son, you're like me. You can't draw a straight line.” She was right. Steve excelled at logical, analytical, and technical pursuits, but the creative side of his mind remained largely inaccessible because he lacked the artistic skills needed to express it.

Then technology changed everything. Word processing first gave Steve the tools to become a more effective writer. More recently, artificial intelligence has unlocked his ability to create art by providing the technical skills that once stood between imagination and expression.

Steve & Mo

Working with his AI collaborator, Mo, Steve remains the creative director throughout the process. He guides every decision involving subject matter, composition, balance, color, mood, and lighting until each painting reflects his personal vision.

Ten Collections. Ten Destinations. One Improbable Journey.

Ten collections. Ten destinations. One improbable journey through places that have disappeared, places that remain, and the ghosts that still know the way home.

Steve's mission is to preserve history through nostalgic paintings of places, people, and moments that have shaped people's lives. Each painting is paired with a brief historical narrative designed to draw viewers into the scene, evoke warm memories, encourage exploration of local history, and inspire others to preserve the stories of their own communities through creative expression.

Meta AI, after reviewing Steve's Mitchellville collection, wrote: “Today, Mitchellville is recognized for its historical significance and the efforts of local preservationists like Steve Hales, who are working to document and preserve its history through various projects, including art and research.”

Now, Steve has been called a lot of things in his life, but a “preservationist” is a new one. Still, he gladly accepts the honor. He's gratified to contribute, in his own small way, to keeping local history alive.
