Chesapeake Beach Railway Station

Chesapeake Beach Railway Station

Historical narrative

The historic Chesapeake Beach Railway Station was built in 1898 as the eastern terminus of the railway that helped transform the Calvert County shoreline into a popular resort destination. When the railway officially opened on June 9, 1900, passengers stepped off just a short walk from beaches, hotels, a boardwalk, fishing piers, and amusements. The railway ran from Washington through communities including Upper Marlboro, where travelers boarded for a day at the Bay. The Upper Marlboro stop (see Watercolor 02-15) became a familiar gathering place as families, picnickers, and fishermen awaited the train’s arrival. The trip itself was part of the adventure—a journey through Southern Maryland farms and forests before the Chesapeake suddenly appeared. For decades, the Honeysuckle Route carried thousands seeking cool breezes, swimming, and summertime fun.
