North Beach

Historical narrative
The Town of North Beach developed in the early twentieth century as a Chesapeake Bay resort that attracted Washington and Baltimore residents seeking cool breezes, swimming, and fishing. Connected to nearby beach communities by roads and regional transit, it became a popular summer destination known for its sandy shoreline, cottages, amusement attractions, and relaxed small-town atmosphere. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, visitors arriving on a summer weekend would have found a lively waterfront filled with families carrying beach umbrellas and picnic baskets. Children splashed in the Bay’s shallow waters while teenagers gathered along the boardwalk, enjoying snacks, arcade games, and the excitement of meeting friends. The scent of salt air mixed with popcorn and seafood drifting from nearby stands. As evening approached, couples strolled beside the water, watching the sun set over the Chesapeake and the lights begin to glow along the shore.
