Chesapeake Beach’s The Great Derby

Historical narrative
During the 1920s, the Great Derby Roller Coaster was one of the signature thrills of Chesapeake Beach. Thousands of visitors raced through its wooden curves overlooking the Chesapeake Bay. For a teenager, climbing into the open car was a mixture of excitement and nervous anticipation. The chain lift clicked steadily upward as the beach, boardwalk, and sparkling water spread out below. At the crest came a brief moment of silence before the train plunged down the first drop. Wind rushed past, hats needed holding, and laughter mixed with screams as the coaster sped through dips, turns, and hills. When the ride ended, most teenagers climbed right back into line, eager to experience the thrill again.
