Chesapeake Beach Boardwalk

Chesapeake Beach Boardwalk

Historical narrative

In the 1930s, the boardwalk at Chesapeake Beach was the heart of a lively summer resort developed as part of the Chesapeake Beach Railway’s ambitious vision. On a warm evening, visitors strolled along the boardwalk beside the Bay, enjoying cool breezes that softened the day’s heat. The scent of salt water mingled with popcorn, roasted peanuts, and fresh seafood from nearby stands. Families lingered on benches, watching steamboats and fishing boats move across the Chesapeake, while children hurried toward amusements and games. Electric lights reflected across the dark water, creating shimmering patterns along the shoreline. Couples walked arm in arm as dance music drifted from pavilions and gathering places. The boardwalk offered a relaxed escape from city life, where the pace slowed and summer seemed endless.
