Historical narrative

The Dentzel Carousel has been the centerpiece of Glen Echo Park since 1921. Built by the renowned Dentzel Carousel Company of Philadelphia, it is a rare menagerie carousel featuring hand-carved horses, rabbits, ostriches, a giraffe, deer, a lion, a tiger, and two circus chariots. More than 1,000 lights, decorative mirrors, and elaborate carvings made it one of the most beautiful carousels in the Washington area. In 1926, a Wurlitzer band organ was installed, adding lively music to the experience. Riding the carousel was pure excitement. As the organ played lively marches and waltzes, the brightly painted animals seemed to come alive. The Dentzel Carousel survived the closing of Glen Echo Amusement Park in 1968 through the determined efforts of local citizens who raised funds to save it. A twenty-year restoration was completed in 2003, with additional major rehabilitation completed in 2019–2020. Today, the carousel remains in its historic setting and continues to operate seasonally for the public.
