The Fun House Slide (05-16)

Historical narrative
A ride down the famous Fun House Slide at Glen Echo Park was a highlight of any visit. Steve's mother would tell him about her recollections of the slide. Steve could tell by the big smile on her face and the twinkle in her eyes how much she enjoyed those days at Glen Echo in the 1920s. Climbing the wooden stairs, she said that she could hear the laughter and shrieks of riders already racing downward. At the top, attendants provided burlap bags that made the trip faster and smoother. Sitting down and pushing off, riders quickly gathered speed on the polished wooden slide. The rush lasted only seconds, but it felt much longer to excited children. At the bottom, riders tumbled off their bags, grinning and eager to climb back up for another turn. It was simple, thrilling fun that became a cherished Glen Echo memory.
