Historical narrative

In 1959, the Water Boats were among the most popular attractions at the famous Trimper Rides in Ocean City. Located near the southern end of the boardwalk, the ride, located inside a building filled with kiddie rides, offered children a chance to captain their own small motorized boats around a shallow lagoon. Part of the growing collection of family attractions that made Trimper's a beloved destination, the water boats combined adventure with a sense of independence. Youngsters eagerly climbed aboard brightly painted boats and gripped the steering wheels as the motors gently propelled them around the lagoon. Parents watched from the railings, waving and taking photographs. The sounds of laughter, splashing water, carousel music, and distant ocean waves filled the air. For many children, piloting a water boat was their first taste of being a captain, creating memories that lasted a lifetime.
