Historical narrative

In 1912, the Herschell-Spillman Grand Carousel at Trimper Rides was one of the most exciting attractions a visitor could find in Ocean City, Maryland. Installed at Trimper Rides in 1912 by the Herschell-Spillman Company, it represented the craftsmanship and wonder of the golden age of amusement rides. At a time when automobiles were becoming increasingly common and motion pictures were still relatively new, the carousel offered a thrilling experience for vacationers arriving by train and steamer. Children and adults alike were captivated by the hand-carved horses, each painted in bright colors and adorned with ornate trappings. As the carousel turned, the band organ filled the air with lively music that could be heard across the boardwalk. Riders felt a sense of adventure as their horses rose and fell. Surrounded by ocean breezes, laughter, and excitement, the carousel embodied the carefree spirit of a summer holiday on Maryland's shore.
