Boardwalk in the Evening, 1940s (04-05)

Historical narrative
As evening settled over Ocean City's boardwalk in the mid-1940s, the heat of the day gave way to cool ocean breezes drifting in from the Atlantic. Families dressed in their best summer clothes strolled beneath glowing storefront lights, stopping to admire shop windows or enjoy ice cream and saltwater taffy. The sounds of laughter, carousel music, and distant dance bands mingled with the rhythmic crash of waves beyond the dunes. Young couples walked arm in arm while children clutched souvenirs won at games of chance. Returning veterans mingled with vacationers enjoying the growing prosperity of the postwar years. The scent of popcorn, hot dogs, and the salty sea air filled the night. Under strings of lights, the boardwalk became a lively gathering place until late evening hours.
