Boardwalk and the Beach, 1930 (04-04)

Historical narrative
As depicted in this 1930 scene, the Ocean City, Maryland, boardwalk was crowded with summer visitors enjoying a warm day by the sea. The elevated wooden boardwalk stood directly above the beach on sturdy pilings, with stairways providing easy access to the sand below. Vacationers lined the railings shoulder to shoulder, watching the activity on the beach and in the surf. Below, children played at the water's edge while adults waded in the shallow waves or relaxed on the sand. Bathing suits of the era were modest and practical, reflecting the fashions of the day. Large hotels and guesthouses rose immediately behind the boardwalk with their porches and balconies filled with spectators. The scene conveys a bustling yet relaxed resort atmosphere, where ocean breezes, laughter, and the sound of breaking waves defined a classic summer day.
