Historical narrative
Upper Marlboro can trace its formal education roots to 1835, when the private Marlboro Academy was established, with public funding beginning circa 1865. In 1921, the new public MHS, built on the site of the Marlboro Academy, was dedicated. Over the years, MHS grew from 8 to 16 classrooms, and a gymnasium was added. Elementary grades were also taught in the facility. MHS students moved to Frederick Sasscer High School upon its opening in 1948, and MHS was rededicated as Marlboro Elementary School, serving younger students until its closing in 1974.
