Frederick Sasscer High School (FSHS) (02-18)

Historical narrative
FSHS opened in 1948 to address overcrowding at Marlboro High School. FSHS had 19 classrooms as well as an auditorium, gymnasium, library, and cafeteria. In 1961–62, a 22-room addition was constructed. As segregation ended and the county grew, other schools replaced FSHS, until by the mid-1970s, FSHS served only as a junior high school. In the late 1970s, the FSHS facility was repurposed as the Sasscer Administration Building, the headquarters of the Prince George's County Board of Education. This watercolor depicts FSHS circa 1960, when students 16 and over could smoke on the patio between the front entrance and the cafeteria wing on the right. The principal at the doors might well have been admonishing the smokers for being outside the smoking perimeter.
