Upper Marlboro Train Station (02-15)
❧ ✦ ❧

Historical narrative
The Chesapeake Beach Railway ran almost 28 miles between the start of the line in Washington, D.C., and Chesapeake Beach from the late 1800s until the mid-1930s, when it ceased operations amid the Great Depression and the rise of the automobile. The only train station between the line's starting point and its beach destination was in Upper Marlboro. That station, built circa 1898, is the subject of this watercolor. The train tracks ran close to the west end of what became Frederick Sasscer High School, then crossed Old Crain Highway near what is now Upper Marlboro Town Hall, but was once the town swimming pool.
