The Beginnings of Today's Courthouse (02-09)

Historical narrative

In 1949, as the county's population reached almost 195,000, the courthouse was remodeled and enlarged, including replacement of the Victorian façade with a portico and columns, giving it the classic Colonial Revival look we know today when viewed from Main Street. To Steve and many of his contemporaries, this was the view of the courthouse with which they became familiar and identified. Even more additions were constructed in 1957 and 1969, when the county's population grew to almost 360,000 and 660,000, respectively.
