Campfire at the 4-H Camp (10-15)

Campfire at the 4-H Camp

Historical narrative

As evening settled over the lake, Steve and his fellow 4-Hers gathered around the campfire for one of the most memorable parts of the annual 4-H summer camp. Dressed in costumes representing assigned Native American tribes, the campers took pride in what they had learned about the tribes' history, traditions, and customs as part of the camp program. One group at a time, campers stepped into the center of the circle to sing, compete with the other groups, and share what they had learned. Voices carried across the lake as each group tried to outdo the others with enthusiasm and harmony. Between songs, campers listened to stories about the history and cultures associated with the other tribes. Surrounded by tall pines, the dark lake, and the warm glow of the fire, the competition became secondary to the friendships and memories being created. Those campfire evenings remained a treasured part of Steve's 4-H summers.
