A Sweetheart’s Portrait (10-07)

Historical narrative
A 1945 portrait captures Steve’s mother during a deeply personal chapter of World War II. Radiating warmth and confidence, she wears a fashionable blue suit accented by crossed gold sabers associated with the U.S. Cavalry, while her carefully styled hair reflects the elegance of the era. The inspiration for this painting was the cherished photograph she placed in a beautiful leather-bound sweetheart photo case, complete with a soft velvet lining. She gave it to Steve’s father so he could carry her image safely inside his uniform breast pocket while serving in Europe. During World War II, such sweetheart photographs became treasured keepsakes for servicemen separated from wives, fiancées, and loved ones. Small enough to carry close to the heart, they provided a tangible connection to home amid the uncertainty of military life. This portrait therefore represents far more than a beautiful young woman—it preserves a private expression of love, devotion, and hope during wartime.
