Hailes Castle — 12th Century England (10-03)

Historical narrative
Hailes Castle was a medieval fortified site at Hailes, Gloucestershire, England, associated with a ringwork that formed part of the castle during the troubled period known as the Anarchy. By the 1240s, however, Hailes Castle had given way to a very different chapter in the site’s history. Richard, Earl of Cornwall, founded Hailes Abbey there in 1246 as a Cistercian monastery. The abbey later became a renowned pilgrimage destination after receiving a relic believed to contain Christ’s blood. Today, the surviving archaeological remains evoke centuries of English medieval history and hark back to Steve’s English roots. This painting imaginatively reconstructs Hailes Castle in its fortified prime, surrounded by the peaceful Cotswold countryside.
