Benedictine Monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat

Benedictine Monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat, Montserrat, Catalonia

Historical narrative

Montserrat, home to one of Catalonia’s most spectacular landmarks, lies about 30 miles northwest of Barcelona. Its name means “serrated mountain,” describing the dramatic, saw-toothed peaks shaped by millions of years of erosion. Montserrat rises to more than 4,000 feet at its highest point and is home to the famous Benedictine Monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat, founded in 1025. The monastery houses La Moreneta, the revered Black Madonna of Montserrat, proclaimed Patron Saint of Catalonia, and has attracted pilgrims for centuries. The renowned Escolania de Montserrat, one of Europe’s oldest boys’ choirs, has documented roots reaching back to 1223. Visitors can arrive by rack railway, cable car—Steve’s choice—or scenic mountain road, then explore hiking trails, panoramic viewpoints, and quiet hermitages nestled among the cliffs. Montserrat has endured turbulent periods in Catalan history. During the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), the monks were forced to leave, and 23 monks were killed; the autonomous government of Catalonia protected Montserrat from destruction and looting. Even more devastating was the destruction inflicted by Napoleon’s army in 1811–1812. Combining breathtaking natural beauty, spiritual significance, and centuries of history, Montserrat remains a remarkable symbol of Catalan identity and cultural heritage.
