L’Estel Ferit

Historical narrative
In this piece, Steve was drawn to the meaning behind L’Estel Ferit (“The Wounded Star”), a striking 33-foot sculpture by German artist Rebecca Horn. He learned that the sculpture was installed on Barcelona’s Barceloneta beach in 1992 as part of the city’s Olympic-era waterfront transformation. Constructed from four rust-colored steel-and-glass boxes precariously stacked and leaning against one another, the sculpture deliberately conveys instability and fragility. L’Estel Ferit is widely understood as a memorial to the older Barceloneta waterfront that disappeared during redevelopment before the 1992 Olympics. In particular, it is associated with the neighborhood’s modest chiringuitos, or merenderos—informal beach bars and restaurants that once lined the shore and were demolished during the transformation. The four boxes have also been interpreted as the small, densely packed apartments known as quarts de pis , characteristic of working-class Barceloneta. Today, surrounded by the busy beach and modern waterfront, the sculpture serves as a poignant reminder of the neighborhood’s working-class and maritime past and the changes brought by Barcelona’s Olympic redevelopment.
