The Paratrooper (05-23)

Historical narrative
The Paratrooper was one of Glen Echo Park's newer thrill rides, installed in 1963 as amusement parks continued introducing more modern attractions. Manufactured by Frank Hrubetz & Co., the ride consisted of a revolving circle of suspended cars approximately 60 feet in diameter. A hydraulic mechanism raised the entire apparatus about 34 feet above the ground at an angle of roughly 45 degrees while the cars swung outward as the ride rotated. The result was a thrilling sensation of rising, dipping, and flying through the air. Its colorful cars and distinctive umbrella-like appearance made it a standout attraction on the Glen Echo midway. As the ride climbed and began its circular motion, riders felt the cool breeze and the sensation of being suspended high above the ground. The combination of height, speed, and swinging motion offered an exciting alternative to the more intimidating experience of the roller coaster. For many young visitors, the Paratrooper provided a memorable taste of the modern thrill rides that were becoming increasingly popular during Glen Echo's final years.
