Historical narrative

The Whip was one of Glen Echo Park's enduring attractions, installed in 1918 and remaining popular until the park closed in 1968. The ride consisted of small two-passenger cars that followed a winding oval track. As each car rounded the curves, centrifugal force suddenly whipped it outward, giving the ride its name and providing a surprising burst of speed and excitement. The Whip became one of the park's long-lasting attractions and remained a favorite throughout much of its amusement era. The ride delivered just the right mix of fun and thrills. Couples, families, and children laughed as the cars snapped around the turns, causing riders to slide playfully against one another. The combination of speed, sudden movement, and unexpected swings made each ride exciting without requiring the towering heights of a roller coaster. For generations of Glen Echo visitors, the Whip became a classic amusement-park experience and a cherished memory. This was one of Steve's go-to rides at Glen Echo.
