The Plimhimmon (04-29)

Historical narrative
The historic Plimhimmon Hotel was one of Ocean City's grand Victorian-era landmarks. Originally opened in 1894 by Rosalie Tilghman Shreve, it stood prominently on the Boardwalk and became a centerpiece of Ocean City's development as a fashionable seaside resort. By 1957, the hotel still retained much of its old-fashioned charm, with broad porches, rocking chairs, and a relaxed atmosphere that appealed to families returning summer after summer. For a guest arriving in 1957, the scent of salt air drifted through open windows, accompanied by the sound of the Atlantic surf just beyond the Boardwalk. Days were spent on the beach, strolling the wooden planks, and enjoying evening entertainment. At night, cool ocean breezes filled the rooms, creating memories of a simpler seaside vacation era. The Plimhimmon survived until November 21, 1962, when fire destroyed the historic hotel, leaving behind photographs, memories, and the enduring image preserved here.
