Historical narrative

The Matterhorn at Trimper Rides was among the newer generation of thrill rides that reflected America's growing fascination with speed, motion, and modern amusement technology. Named for the famous Alpine peak, the ride spun a series of cars around a circular track while rising and dipping over undulating hills. For Steve, then a 13-year-old boy spending a summer evening on the Ocean City boardwalk, the Matterhorn offered a taste of adventure and independence. As the ride accelerated, the force of the ride pressed him against the seat while cool ocean air rushed past. Bright midway lights streaked across his vision, and laughter mixed with the distant sound of surf. Stepping off, he felt exhilarated, dizzy, and eager to ride again.
