Octopus Ride, 1960 (04-23)

Historical narrative
In 1960, the Octopus ride at Trimper Rides was among the more exciting attractions on the Ocean City boardwalk. The Octopus combined rotating arms with cars that rose, dipped, and spun, creating a thrilling sensation of unpredictability. For a 13-year-old boy like Steve, it represented a step beyond the kiddie rides of childhood. After climbing into the car with friends, he would hear the operator start the machinery and feel a rush of anticipation. As the ride accelerated, the cool evening air mixed with the scent of salt water and popcorn. The cars swung higher and spun faster, drawing laughter and shouts. Stepping off afterward, slightly dizzy and grinning, he felt wonderfully grown-up.
