Airplane Ride, 1959 (04-21)

Historical narrative
It was 1959. The indoor airplane ride at Trimper Rides was already part of a family amusement tradition that stretched back decades, when the Trimper family helped establish the south end of the boardwalk as a permanent center of seaside entertainment. The little airplanes, suspended from a rotating center, gave children the thrilling illusion of flight while parents watched from the rail. A young child stepping aboard would smell machine oil, salt air, popcorn, and cotton candy all at once. As the ride began, the planes rose gently, lights blinked against the dim indoor ceiling, and the organ music mixed with laughter. For a few minutes, the child was not on the boardwalk anymore but soaring above an imagined ocean adventure with wide-eyed delight.
