The Early Courthouse (02-06)
❧ ✦ ❧

Historical narrative
The first county courthouse in Upper Marlboro was a frame building built circa 1720, when the county's population was about 3,500. It was later replaced by the brick structure depicted in this piece, built circa 1747 and used until 1880. Using an old photograph of the dilapidated brick courthouse, this watercolor reconstructs the building, providing a faithful historical representation of the original, which was a blend of Federal and Greek Revival architectural elements adapted to the needs of a small town. The courthouse was located on the island between today's Main and Pratt Streets.
