A View Down Main Street (02-01)
❧ ✦ ❧

Historical narrative
While Upper Marlboro's Main Street is certainly different today than it was more than a century ago, it is still recognizable by the cupola atop the landmark county courthouse on the left. This watercolor represents a view from the Main Street/Pratt Street (today's names) split, looking southwest along Main Street. The year was 1895. The courthouse in those days had a Victorian façade, electricity was just being introduced to the town, and Main Street was still a dirt road. Transportation was by foot or horse and buggy.
