Route 556 Beyond Central Avenue (01-16)

Historical narrative

Back in the day, this then-unpaved extension of Maryland Route 556 in Mitchellville, or Enterprise Road, was known as Enterprise Road Extended, having opened to traffic in 1955. The extension ran from Central Avenue to its terminus at Largo-Marlboro Road, now Largo Road. In 1983, Enterprise Road and its extension were renamed Maryland Route 193, creating a continuous route from Kensington to the Largo Road terminus. This piece shows part of the extension as it might have appeared in 1960. Steve features the first vehicle he drove: a 1952 Studebaker 2R5 pickup.
