St. Charles Streetcar

Historical narrative
This painting captures the timeless charm of New Orleans’ St. Charles streetcar, gliding beneath the magnificent live oaks and Spanish moss of St. Charles Avenue in the 1950s. The line began service in 1835, initially using steam-powered locomotives and cars and later horse-drawn streetcars. It was electrified in 1893, and the distinctive green Perley A. Thomas streetcars, still associated with the line today, were introduced in 1923–24. The St. Charles Line is recognized by the National Park Service as the oldest continuously operating street railway in the United States and a National Historic Landmark. What makes the St. Charles streetcar so appealing is the experience itself: riding through grand neighborhoods beneath a canopy of ancient oaks, passing historic homes and gardens while the polished wooden car gently rattles along its tracks. For visitors, the streetcar is more than transportation—it is an authentic, wonderfully nostalgic ride through New Orleans history.
