Glen Echo Today (05-25)

Historical narrative
Today, Glen Echo Park blends history, art, and recreation beneath the trees overlooking the Potomac River. Founded in 1891 as the National Chautauqua Assembly, Glen Echo began as a center for education, culture, lectures, music, and lifelong learning. It later became one of the Washington area’s most beloved amusement parks, where generations enjoyed roller coasters, the famous Crystal Pool, dancing, and the beautifully hand-carved Dentzel Carousel, installed in 1921. When the amusement-park era ended, Glen Echo entered a new chapter as a vibrant cultural center. Today, visitors enjoy art studios, galleries, theater productions, festivals, children’s programs, and dance classes, while the restored carousel remains a cherished attraction. Walking through Glen Echo today, one can still sense the ghosts of its amusement-park past. Yet remarkably, the park has come full circle, returning to its original spirit of creativity, learning, culture, and community while preserving the history that makes Glen Echo unique.
