Historical narrative
St. Mary's in Upper Marlboro, depicted here, was constructed in 1824, although the parish traces its roots back to the early 1700s. The church is notable for its connection to the Carroll family, specifically John Carroll, who was born in Upper Marlboro and later became the first Roman Catholic bishop in the United States. The original 1824 building was eventually deemed too small for the growing congregation. Today's much larger church was dedicated in 1899. The Gothic-style structure remains a central landmark in the town today.
