Locust Grove (Slingluff House) (01-27)

Historical narrative

Built in about 1880, Locust Grove is a large 2½-story, side-gabled frame house with a large rear kitchen wing in Mitchellville. The main block is distinguished by three prominent, elaborate dormers, projecting bays in the gable ends, and Gothic Revival details in the lintels and vergeboards. The home was built by Truman C. Slingluff on the plantation of his great-grandfather, Fielder Cross. Locust Grove is reported to have had the first piped domestic gas in the area and remains a prominent visual landmark in central Prince George's County.
