Melford Plantation (01-18)
❧ ✦ ❧

Historical narrative
Mitchellville's Melford Plantation was built by Dr. Richard Duckett in 1810 on 400 acres originally known as Howerton's Range, obtained by John Howerton in 1670 when the land was still part of Calvert County. The property is near the intersection of what is now U.S. Route 50 (John Hanson Highway) and Routes 3/301 (Crain Highway). In its heyday, Melford included terrace gardens, as well as a family cemetery, barn, pump house, meat house, and slave quarters. A piece depicting the slave quarters is featured next in this collection.
